I’ve been trying to play catch-up with video footage I’ve collected on past hikes. The most recent? Mt Cabot, in March of 2019. The fun part of all of this is that I’m re-living past hikes. As I write this, the afternoon’s weather was quite warm and pleasant — the kind where you open the windows and let in some fresh air. Did I care, with warm spring air streaming in the windows, that the video was shot in winter? I leave that as an exercise to the reader. Did I remember how nice a day it was? I’ll answer that right now: oh hell yeah!
The best part about blogging is having that tangible record. Photos and notes about the day, and then posting it all gives me a tremendous shove to make sure I actually do it. Writing isn’t particularly hard, but procrastinating is particularly easy. Encouragement? So many of you have posted wonderful comments. Occasionally I meet folks on the trail that read all this, and your warm receptions are very nice indeed. Case in point: a coworker mentioned that a family member is a reader of my blog, and that it’s been very helpful for planning hikes. Wow!
That said, going back and remembering those epic days spent on the trail does also indeed whet the appetite, and gives me a tiny push to get out of bed in the morning of my precious day off. Already, I’m remembering an amazing afternoon descending the Rainbow Trail, thinking to this summer, and perhaps a backpacking trip in the Wild River Wilderness to explore that area a bit more. As far as today, and more specifically “right now”? I’m remembering an afternoon on Cabot, and so for this summer, what about a quick “weekend” trip nailing down the trail between Waumbek and Cabot, visiting Unknown Pond? I know I’ve never said this before… “stay tuned!” The law of unintended consequences says that when you start something, you have no idea what lies in wait. When I started this blog, I very obviously had no idea what lay in wait. What fun indeed!
Anyway, those trips are, at best, at least several weeks ahead of this moment. For the time being, let’s turn back the clocks. I was trying to nail down Mt Cabot before the end of winter, and as I recall, I made it with about 45 minutes to spare. Nostalgia is often what gets us out of bed in the morning — perhaps we can do it again! So if you’ve hiked Cabot in wintertime before, maybe this is the reminder that you should probably plan on it again in a few months. And if you’ve never hiked it in winter… y’know, I can think of much worse things to do with an idle afternoon. And few better.
We’re just a little bit over six months before the snow starts showing up again…
As always, stay safe out there.
