Worthwhile mileage doesn’t mean hard miles. Often the best is nearby, and relatively untrodden. If you’re not paying attention, you might just find something.

Hiking Monadnock from the north, at the southern end of the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway, proves yet again that the mountain has differences.
Two mountains with a brisk drive in between? Hadn’t done that trick in awhile. But it was totally worth it. Superlative views on a clear day. What’s not to like?
The northern half of the Moats is going to make you work for the peak. But the prize at the top is absolutely glorious.
Sometimes, you need a break; something quick and easy. And oftentimes, you just return to your roots. A palate cleanser like Mount Monadnock is that old standby that hits all the buttons, just right.
After turning back before summiting Sandwich Mountain, I returned half a year later, for a hike that didn’t disappoint.
