Two years ago, I hiked out to Thoreau Falls from the west, along Ethan Pond trail. Now, let’s see what the eastern half looks like…
Hiking
The sublime is found in the quietude. You, the trail, the mountain, fresh air. Hiking North Pack Monadnock had all that in spades. Perfect.
I’ve been trying to play catch-up with video footage I’ve collected on past hikes. The most recent? Mt Cabot, in March of 2019. The fun part of all of this is that I’m re-living past hikes. As I write this, the afternoon’s weather was quite warm and pleasant — the kind where you open the windows and let in some fresh air.
Mt Moriah (4,049 feet). Gorham, NH. 2020-11-05 (Thursday.) Via Stony Brook, and Carter-Moriah Trails, and the summit spur. 10 miles round-trip, approx 3,100 feet elevation gain. 45 dF at the trailhead, 60 dF at the summit. Winds were negligible in the trees, about 10-15 knots at the summit. Sun, with a few clouds throughout. (Note: MW-Obs called for winds of 45-65 MPH with gusts up to 80 MPH on the […]
Wildcat Mountain D & A (4,062 and 4,422 feet, respectively). Jackson, NH. 2020-10-14 (Wednesday). Via Wildcat Valley X-C Ski Trail, Wildcat Ridge Trail, 19 Mile Brook Trail, Wildcat River Trail, Bog Brook Trail.. Approximately 12 miles round-trip. (NB: The 12 mile number is from Gaia GPS, and I’m fairly certain that it draws mileage from a 2-D model, not taking elevation into account. This is especially significant where Wildcat A […]
It was cold, and the view from the top wasn’t great. But that’s not why we go out and hike, right?
Hiking Owl’s Head “by the book” is not very easy. Throw two bushwhacks into the mix, and you get something that’s quite a bit easier. Wait… what?!
Hiking Mahoosuc Notch is a noteworthy achievement for anyone. But is it really as tough as people make it to be?
Mt Tecumseh might not be four thousand feet, but it still carries its weight as well as any four thousand footer.
I don’t know how the words “Pemi Loop” can’t equate with “tough.” But sometimes, there’s no easy way to enjoy such an amazing experience. And maybe that’s the point.
Two mountains with a brisk drive in between? Hadn’t done that trick in awhile. But it was totally worth it. Superlative views on a clear day. What’s not to like?
